You may have spent some time tinkering around with different batches of fried rice, trying to recreate a unique Chinese fried rice that tastes good just like the one made in a restaurant. You don’t have to look anywhere further, the next section provides you with the best recipe.

One of the most flavourful and traditional Chinese side dishes is fried rice. It might be time to try the homemade version if you usually get it at your favourite restaurant. You are free to change the ingredients to suit your preferences. Even if you don’t have much experience making Chinese food, you can still create the rice because it’s not too difficult to prepare.

Ingredients to Make Chinese Fried Rice

1. 2 cups (473 mL) water

2. 1 cup (195 g) medium-grain rice, white or brown

3. ½ teaspoon (2.84 g) salt

4. 1 tablespoon (approximately 15 mL) neutral oil, such as grapeseed or canola

5. 1 small white onion, chopped

6. 1 cup (150 g) frozen peas and carrots, defrosted

7. 1 teaspoon (5 g) ginger, finely chopped

8. 1 teaspoon (5 g) garlic, finely chopped

9. 2 eggs, lightly beaten

10. 2-3 tablespoons (30-44 mL) soy sauce

11. 1 tablespoon (15 mL) sesame oil

12. Green onion, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Steps to Make Chinese Fried Rice

Step 1: In a wok with heated oil, add chopped onions and stir-fry for 8 to 10 minutes, or until onions are nicely browned. Then, remove the onions from the wok.

Step 2: Allow the wok to cool for a while

Step 3: Mix the egg using 3 drops of soy and sesame oil.

Step 4: Pour in 1/2 tbsp oil and swirl to coat the wok’s surfaces then pour in the egg mixture and immediately swirl the egg until it sets against the pan. Remove the egg from the wok and chop it into small pieces after flipping it over and briefly cooking the other side.

Step 5: Add the sauteed onion, carrots, and peas to a wok that has been heated with one tablespoon of oil. Stir-fry for two minutes.

Step 6: After thoroughly mixing the rice, green onions, and bean sprouts, stir-fry for three minutes.

Step 7: Toss in the chopped egg and 2 tablespoons of light soy sauce, then fold into the rice mixture. Stir-fry for an additional minute and serve.

There are several methods of getting this done, you can fry your rice in butter, canola oil, or olive oil to create a delicious base. 

You can add as much or as little soy sauce and sesame oil as you like, but they will give your dish that distinctive fried rice flavour. 

For added spice, you can even combine ingredients like chilli pepper, garlic powder, ginger root, or Sriracha sauce

Gluten-Free Tip: Tamari or coconut aminos can be used in place of soy sauce to give your food a delicious gluten-free taste. 

Fried rice seasoned with a flavorful blend of soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice wine vinegar, sesame oil, and brown sugar, topped with pickled ginger and green onions, is something you should try if you’re a taste enthusiast.

Why is Chinese Fried Rice so Dark?

The rich brown and caramel colour of this fried rice is due to the dark mushroom soy sauce. This soy sauce gives food a lovely caramel brown without increasing the salt content significantly.

Not very salty, dark mushroom soy sauce also gives a dish a hint. Although you can choose not to use it, the fried rice will have a light brown colour.
