You may have been wondering about how to prepare fried rice to give you that signature taste. Remember, you’ll need to drizzle in sesame oil, soy sauce, and you can even mix ingredients like garlic powder but you will change your notion about how yummy this recipe is if you follow these simple guide.

Step 1: Bring a big saucepan of water to a boil by filling it approximately halfway. In the meantime, rinse the rice well in a sieve until the water is nearly clear.

Step 2: After three minutes of boiling, sift the rice using a fine-mesh strainer that fits within the saucepan. You can use a butter knife or chopstick to allow it to get to the bottom of the strainer.

Step 3:  Place the strainer in the saucepan with the water simmering and cover it with foil. Cover the strainer with the pot lid. Cover the pot and strainer’s rim with foil or a moist tea towel.

Step 4: About 15 minutes of steaming, rice that is cooked through but still al dente; the texture should be drier than steamed rice. Move to an ovenproof dish and allow it to reach room temperature. 

Step 5: Preheat a large wok or seasoned cast-iron pan. Add one tablespoon of oil. When the oil is shimmering, add the eggs and fry, and break them up into little pieces, for about a minute.

Step 6: Cook garlic and ginger, tossing constantly, until fragrant and garlic begins to brown, about 30 seconds. Add white and pale green scallion parts and cook, tossing constantly, until softened about 1 minute.  Add rice and immediately toss to combine. Fry rice, stirring constantly, until no clumps remain and you begin to hear some light popping sounds from the rice toasting.

Step 7:  Mix in the soy sauce, sugar, salt, and pepper cook, stirring continuously, for approximately a minute, or until the soy sauce is absorbed. Add the eggs, peas, and portions of the dark green scallions. Cook, stirring frequently, for approximately two minutes longer.

Is Fried Rice Healthy?

Making it at home using this recipe is far healthier than ordering it from a restaurant. Although it has more calories than plain rice and I wouldn’t classify it as healthy food, the majority of the ingredients are whole foods.

What Gives Fried Rice its Flavor?

The taste is from soy sauce and sesame oil. Fish sauce can also be used in its stead. A little seasoning with salt and pepper can also help keep the taste in check. As you taste, be careful not to be too much for the rice.

1. Vegan Fried Rice: You can make this vegan by using tofu and a plant-based butter replacement in place of the eggs and butter. For more flavour and nutrition, add more veggies such as bell peppers, broccoli, sprouts, maize, and green beans.

2. Kimchi Fried Rice: This Korean-inspired version gets its punchy spicy flavour from the addition of diced kimchi. For an additional flavour boost, you may also add gochujang, which is Korean chilli paste.

3. Thai Basil Fried Rice: For a savoury  Thai variation, stir in some Thai basil leaves and a little amount of fish sauce. For more spice, feel free to add some chopped chillies. Japanese Fried Rice (Yakimeshi): Toss in cooked shrimp or chicken, sliced bell peppers, and a dash of sake (Japanese rice wine) to add some Japanese flavour. 

4. Pork Fried Rice: After the chopped pork is thoroughly cooked, stir-fry it and continue with the original recipe. Many Chinese restaurants often provide this fried rice.

5. Seafood Fried Rice: Add some seafood to your meal, such as squid, crab meat, or prawns, to make it better. Another option is to include flying fish roe. Begin by preparing the seafood of your choice, ensuring it is cooked and then set it aside. After that, mix the fish with the rice. To retain the delicate texture of the salmon roe, add it right before the last stir. 

6. Beef Fried Rice: Stir some marinated beef strips into your fried rice. This is a substantial main meal that requires the steak to be sautéed before the rice is added.
