Porridge Yam Recipe that You Need to Learn from

Porridge yam is one of the easiest and most popular Nigerian foods. Many people have made porridge yams using different recipes – some are simple while the rest are not. One importance of this recipe is that anyone can follow it to get exactly what you are seeing below.

Ingredients for Porridge Yam

This is the everyday porridge yam you cook in your home with fresh tomatoes, pepper, salt, etc. Fresh tomatoes in pottage!

The average Nigerian does not use fresh tomatoes, but if you want to get something that looks yummy and inviting, the type you only see at 5-star restaurants and eateries, then you need tomato paste.

Ingredients for Porridge Yam

1. 2Kg/ 2000g peeled white yam

2. Half cup of ground crayfish

3. 1 seasoning cubes.

4. 150 ml of palm oil.

5. 300ml Ground fresh tomatoes

6. Small ground fresh Peppers

7. 1 cup of Sliced Onions

Yam Porridge’s Preparation

I can make this yam porridge in only 20 minutes once you have all the ingredients prepared.

Peel off the bark of the yam, slice to serveable sizes, wash and set aside. Also slice or grind the tomatoes, fresh pepper, and a cup of crayfish. I use lots of onions while making most foods, just for its health benefits.

Pour 150ml of palm oil into a cooking pot, allow to heat, and bleach a little (about two minutes). Add half of the sliced onions. Pour in the ground tomatoes/peppers.

Fry the ground tomatoes/pepper and onions for five to ten minutes, add water, and transfer the sliced yams. Add water so that the yam pieces are almost submerged in water (but not completely submerged).

Allow boiling then add crayfish, a seasoning cube, and salt and allow to cook for the next 10 minutes. Add the remaining sliced onions.

Cover and allow to cook for another five minutes.

You can pierce with a cooking fork to know if the yam is soft enough for consumption. You can add vegetables, it is very nice for porridge yam even though I omitted it while making the delicious recipe above.

Cook for another three to five minutes and you just made my favorite yam porridge.

Stir all together, and keep stirring until it thickens.

With the steps above, your porridge yam is ready. You can add additional ingredients like fish, meat, kpomo, etc for a more tasty experience.
